Democracy under the Indian constitution has finally got its due place in Kashmir. The massive public turnout in both state and general elections within the last year are a conclusive proof that the people in the valley have had enough of the violence and economic stagnation, brought upon by the separatist movement. Kashmiris want economic development and progress and they now understand that no progress is possible without peace. A separatist leader in Sajjad Lone fighting the Parliamentary election this time around is a positive sign.
For years, the separatist leaders were prodded and prompted by Pakistan. Now that Pakistan is engaged with its own internal problems and has little time to foment any more trouble in Kashmir, we must take this opportunity to ensure that that total and lasting peace is brought upon in the valley.
